Science Olympiad and Math Tournament Programs

John McCandless students showcase their STEM skills through careful planning, precision and teamwork at the Science and Math Tournament programs. 

JMC’s Science Olympiad team provides opportunities for elementary and middle school students to solve problems and fine-tune projects that require careful calculations and attention to detail. JMC students compete with their peers throughout our region at the San Joaquin County Science Olympiad, taking part in activities such as a macaroni bridge building event and robotics competitions involving small vehicles. For the Spring 2026 County Science Olympiad, JMC joined students from Brookside and Mable Barron to compete with 33 other teams in the Division A tournament on March 7. Then on March 14, JMC, Brookside and Lincoln High School represented Lincoln Unified in the Division B & C tournament.

Math Tournaments expose JMC students to complex problems that require creative thinking skills and collaboration. Through their participation in these math competitions, JMC students must complete individual timed events before working together for a team timed event. Participants must analyze their strengths and weaknesses so they can find the best approach for each problem, giving each student a chance to contribute their strengths to a variety of math problems. 4th - 6th Graders participated in the Math Tournament on April 18 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education. 7th and 8th Graders took part in the tournament on May 9.
